Splendid huge thick bronze zen buddhist temple water bowl, c. 1900. Would make a superb vase for a ikebana flower arrangement in an entrance. The blue/green bronze is thick Meiji Period bronze and the handles are simple but elegant. Undulating ripples on the base add to its wabi sabi appeal. H: about 33cm; diameter : about 50cm. Wonderfully carved antique Japanese noh mask, signed on the back, "KOKUTSURU". This mask is the character 'koomote' the main actor in the noh plays, 'Kocho' and 'Funa-Benkei'. Carved out of hinoki or Japanese cypress wood and with many layers of 'gofun', a crushed oyster pigment. The expression is very expressive and the condition is excellent. c.1920. Dated Bunka 9 nen, July 27, 1812. The inscription on the vase says the this large bronze temple altar vase was donated by the monk, Teizn Raien Zenteimon of Saiho Temple in Saegu Village. Standing about 38cm tall, it is exceptionally large and has a wonderful patina and wabi sabi aged wear. The handles have mythical elephant faces and the vase is without dents or holes. Regal buddhist gong and lacquered stand used for sutra chanting in a Kyoto zen temple; gong dated Tempo 13 (1842). The stand is black lacquered with gold gilt and copper metal fittings. The bell is bronze and has the inscription: "Donated by Hayashi Kinbei; Made by Nanjo Yasubei and the date, 1842, year of the tiger, July, and the name of the zen temple: Chudo Temple". Exceptional set of 6 Oribe ceramic plates from the late 19th century, C. 1895 Meiji Period. Wonderful lines and art deco feel exhibiting the trademark olive greens and iron feldspar markings. One of the finest and biggest zen buddhist 'zushi' travelling altars we have ever seen. C. 1860 late Edo Period. Most likely the owner was a high ranking samurai. The altar stands 69cm tall and 47cm wide. The metal fittings are copper and exceptional. Inside is a gold gilt inner chamber. The condition is very good. Ask for shipping quote.

Exceptional carving of Kannon Bosastu or Bodhisattva the goddess of compassion and mercy. She holds a lotus in her left hand symbolizing purity and ability to rise from the mud to transform into a beautiful flower. She stands on a stand of lotus pedals with large lotus leaves. To the side are buddhist clouds. Painted in the Edo Period c. 1860, some of the colors have worn away and the right foot is chipped off. Hinoki wood. Comes in paulownia wood box.
