Stunning and exquisite tea ceremony Edo Period c.1860 antique Japanese 'kogo' which literally means "where the fragrance meets" in the shape of a magnificent frog. The antique kogo is used in the tea ceremony. When the charcoal brazier is changed the kogo was placed in the tokonoma to let its ethereal fragrances waft over the tea participants to set the ambience for the actual drinking of the tea. This bronze kogo has intricate raised scales and of course opens with a compartment for the incense. The bronze is aka or red bronze which was used up until the end of Taisho. c.1860. Antique Japanese shochu jar from Shigaraki, the famous ceramic kiln area outside of Kyoto, the ancient capital. These shochu wine jars were used to ship shochu (distilled rice wine) to Kyoto. The colorful olive green and blue-green nagashi overglazes were poured over a white hagi base. Excellent condition. c.1885. (13½" x 8½") (34cm x 22cm). Oozing the trademark Ryubundo ironcast detail of mokko flowers (flower-rhombuses) and hexagons representing the tortoise shell, an auspicios symbol of longevity, this extremely rare antique Japanese tetsubin or iron tea kettle was the perfect compliment to the sen-no-rikyu tea ceremony. Antique Japanese tea ceremony scroll of sparrows in playful flight. Signed 'Hokyo Shoei'. Hokyo is the honorific name awarded only to top class artists. Kono Shoei being one. He is famous for a scroll he did in 1793 for Matsuo Basho, the famous haiku poet. Fusuma sliding doors he painted can still be seen in Manjuin Temple in the northeast part of Kyoto. c.1793. Having died in exile after being falsly accused, Sugawara Michizane (845-903) was deified by the emperor in 923 AD as the shinto god, Tenjin. Tenjin shrines were soon erected throught Japan. This antique Japanese Tenjin is from a Nara shinto shrine. Bits of wood are missing but this is natural due to age. The whole piece is stunning with great impact. The wood is Japanese cedar (sugi). Rice paper is still peeling from parts of the body. No worm damage. c.1795. (25" x 22" x 14") (62cm x 56cm x 35cm). Shipping/Insurance included in price.

Antique Japanese bronze incense burner signed on the bottom Shogaku with the original box 'tomobako' that has the characters 'KORO' on the front cover. This means 'old bronze'. Dated from the Edo Period c.1880, this incense burner is brilliantly decorated with gourds (hyotan in Japanese), vines, and leaves all in raised relief. Hyotan is a symbol of good luck in Japan. The background is a weave diaper design. Mythical protective deity animals are the handles. c.1880. (5" x 4") (13cm x 10cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $35.

Fabulous Japanese battledore hagoita by Yoshida Eiko, c.1877-1957. He studied under Sukarai Dozan. This hagoita is a 'kyogen-mono' style battledore which have kabuki play heroes in exaggerated poses. The doll itself is framed in a wooden glass enclosed case with a hole on the back for hanging. The doll is made from silk. The Japanese characters read, 'tenka taihe' which means for world peace. In the Edo and Meiji Periods, Japanese would go to the shrines at New Year's to pray not for themselves but for good harvests and everyones well-being. Very good condition. c.1915. Japanese bamboo flower basket made from 'susdake' or smoked bamboo. In Meiji Period, bamboo framing in the ceilings of old Japanese farmhouses would age and color from the smoke of the hearth 'irori' and cooking fires. These pieces of bamboo were prized by bamboo basket makers for their patina. This basket is an excellent example. Wide strips interwoven with a plaited rattan handle. Great condition. c.1890.
