Finely carved 'jizo bosatsu' Kshitigarbha Bodhisattva from the Taisho Period c. 1920.
Colorful buddhist robes and serene tranquil expression. This jizo bodhisatttva protects his vow to save all sentient beings in all Six Realms of rebirth. He carries a staff with metal rings and the flaming jewel symbolizing the Void. This bodhisattva is believed to protect children, relieve suffering and save sentient beings. Very good condition. Wonderful Meiji Period C.1909 painting of a white egret standing on bamboo by the acclaimed master Hishida Shunso (1874-1911). One of Okakura Tenshin's puils, he played a major role in the Meiji era innovation of Nihonga. His real name was Hishida Miyoji and he was also know for his numerous paintings of cats. He was commissioned by the Tokyo National Museum and in 1898 he joined Okakura Tenshin in establishing the Nihon Bijutsuin. In 1903-1905 he traveled extensively overseas holding exhibitions in The United States and Europe. He was awarded the Order Of Culture. Excellent condition. Looks to have been remounted. Has the original kiri wood box. H:6ft x W: 2ft.
