This exceptionally tall, turn of the century c.1900 antique Japanese flower basket was made for the Japanese tea ceremony alcove (tokonoma). Usually a basket and scroll were placed together to create the refined ambience required for the tea ceremony. The body of this basket is entirely twill plaited (ajiro-ami). The rim demonstrates 'ate-buchi' wrapping. Just a bit of wear loss on the under bottom but is very imperceptable. Impact piece. c.1900. (20" x 7") (51cm x 18cm). This particular weave is the first of its kind Kodo Arts has seen in 25 years of collecting. Worth a close look. Strips of bamboo are wound around the base held in place by underlying graduated descending vertical strips of rattan creating a most remarkable effect. Even more astonishing is that every horizontal bamboo strip has had both outer edges blanched lighter to give depth and texture. The handle is wrapped bamboo. c.1900. (7½" x 17½") (19cm x 45cm). A lost art, these antique Japanese farmer baskets were woven by itenerant basket weavers who traveled from village to village taking orders for special farmer baskets to haul goods and store commodities. This basket is one of a pair that had ropes through the metal loops and were carried on a pole to market in the Meiji period (1867-1912). c.1910. (24" x 16") (60cm x 40cm). Artistically woven antique Japanese half moon tea ceremony bamboo flower basket evoking the natural ambience essential to the Japanese tea ceremony. Japanese bamboo flower basket made from 'susdake' or smoked bamboo. In Meiji Period, bamboo framing in the ceilings of old Japanese farmhouses would age and color from the smoke of the hearth 'irori' and cooking fires. These pieces of bamboo were prized by bamboo basket makers for their patina. This basket is an excellent example. Wide strips interwoven with a plaited rattan handle. Great condition. c.1890.
