Finely carved 'jizo bosatsu' Kshitigarbha Bodhisattva from the Taisho Period c. 1920.
Colorful buddhist robes and serene tranquil expression. This jizo bodhisatttva protects his vow to save all sentient beings in all Six Realms of rebirth. He carries a staff with metal rings and the flaming jewel symbolizing the Void. This bodhisattva is believed to protect children, relieve suffering and save sentient beings. Very good condition. Fantastic wood carving of Kukai or later known as Kobo Daishi, the buddhist monk who brought esoteric Shingon Buddhism back from China to Japan. He established the headquarters on the sacred mountain of Mt. Koya near Nara. Carved in the late EDO Period c. 1860's, the statue has 'gi yaman' or original glass eyes. Kobo Daishi sits in his regal monk posture holding a sutra scroll. His right hand once held glass prayer beads. He sits on a wood gold lacquered temple stand which is intricately ornate. The condition of Kobo Daishi is good with a bit of wear behind his head. See pictures. H:about 24cm; W: about 28cm. Ask for shipping quote.

Esoteric Dainichi Nyorai buddha that stands for Vairochana - whom represents the cosmic life that surrounds us like the air we breathe. The proper name is Mahavairochana. His elaborately arranged hair is surmounted by a crown, and he wears jeweled ornaments. The remnants of which we can see on this buddha. He holds the wisdom mudra with the five fingers of the right hand wrapped around the left index finger. The buddha is from the end of the Edo Period C. 1860. The condition is excellent except for the head ornaments which are remnants. (see pictures)

Exceedingly rare Meiji Period c.1885 zen buddhist temple altar stands used for offerings. Japanese cypress wood carved and lacquered with layers of gold lacquer. The japanese characters on one side of each stand read: "Mitanisan Myohodoju" meaning belongs to Mitanisan Myohodo Temple and on the other "Seshu Tomachi - Saitotatsuji" the donator is Mr. Saitotatsuji of the town of Tomachi.
