This antique Japanese furniture chest, called 'tansu' in Japan is 'sogiri' or 100% paulownia wood. Paulownia wood is a fast growing wood that absorbs temperature and moisture change easily. Usually in the olden days, when a daughter was born, the parents planted a kiri tree and the wood from that tree would be big enough to provide a wedding chest when she was of marrying age. This chest has brass handles and mokko (rhombus) locks and door pulls. The entire rim is coated with negoro black and red lacquer with brass fittings on the corners. (one corner is missing). c.1920.
