Hand-hammered copperware tsuiki was an art form perfected in the late 1700's and early 1800's in Niigata Prefecture in northern Japan. Fine copperware reached its zenith in the the late 19th century. After copper is heated, it is formed with a hammer or wooden mallet. Decoration, if any, is either beaten onto the metal, chased, or inlaid. Forming a drip glaze effect out of copper like on this piece is extremely difficult and rare. This antique Japanese vase is signed on the bottom, 'Gyokusen-do' one of the most famous kilns since Edo in Niigata. c.1915. (8½" x 8") (21cm x 20cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $75.
