Wonderful wood fired ash glaze with a dripping green overglaze which has created a fantastic Art Deco look. The Shigaraki kiln area is one of the most famous pottery traditions in Japan. Antique Japanese Shigaraki jar. Shigaraki is one of the seven most famous ceramic centers of ancient Japan. Favored by the Imperial Court after Sen No Rikyu, the originator of the tea ceremony chose Shigaraki wares as the epitomy of the Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic for the tea ceremony. Exceptional rainbow of colors flow in a bouquet of Shigaraki nagashi overglazes. Exquisite antique Japanese early Taisho Period, c.1915, flower vase with the trademark rich, deep oribe olive greens and brown iron glaze geometrical designs. Two crabs adorn the sides. It is signed Kato Sakusuke the 3rd. There is a very slight hairline on the vase lip from the kiln firing and one of the crabs tiny knobs is missing but otherwise in great condition. c.1915.
