The Japanese characters inside the helmet read 'ichiban tai' meaning 1st samurai regiment. The Japanese character's of the helmet's owner are 'Nakayama Zenabei'. Made of many layers of washi, Japanese paper and lacquer, the gold lacquer design on the top is quite unusual. Great condition. c.1860. (13" diameter x 6½") (33cm diameter x 17cm).
