Exceptional Yoshitora original woodblock scroll dated feb. 1866. Yoshitora's real name was Tatsugoro Nagashima and he was a pupil of Kuniyoshi. This woodblock scroll with vivid detail and color is of an 'oiran' the queen of the Geishas. This style of woodblock scroll is called 'Takenaga Hosho' indicating the long length of the woodblock and in this field the narrow width is called 'habahiro hashira-e' (pillar style). The woodblock is 71cm x 23cm, the entire scroll is 147cm x 37cm. Shipping/insurance to usa/western europe $50.

Full length framed original antique Japanese woodblock print with geishas surrounded by vivid crimson chrysanthemum flowers in a vase and purple kimono with red fans and red maple leaves all under a sudare screen. Signed in the lower right corner by the publisher Ohno Umetaro September 10, Meiji 33 (1900) and puplished by his publishing house in Nagano Prefecture. (39" x 15") (100cm x 38cm). This Meiji Period Kunichika antique Japanese tryptich is a scene from a kabuki play, 'Hanamomen Kikyo Hata-Age' performed at the Nakamura-za Kabuki Theater in Edo (Tokyo). A play about the treachery of one of the first shogun Oda Nobunaga's top generals Akechi Mitsuhide, who plotted and assasinated Nobunaga in Kyoto. Hideyoshi, who later became the second shogun, proved his loyalty to Nobunaga by avenging his lord's diabolical fate and killing Mitsuhide. Kabuki actors Nakamura Shigan IV played Akechi Mitsuhide; Nakamura Sojuro I played Hideyoshi; Arashi Daizaburo IV played Misaho, the wife of Mitushide, and Nakamura Nakazo III played Matsushita Kaheiji, a retainer of Mitsuhide. Kunichika, whose real name is Oshima Yasohachi, was born 1835 and died in 1900. He first studied with Toyohara Chikanobu at the Hasegawa School and then with Toyokuni III (Kunisada ) in Edo from around 1850. Kunichika was known for his dramatic actor portraits. This antique Japanese Kunisada woodblock is a scene from a kabuki play performed in Kieigannen 1 (1848) at the Ichimura-za Kabuki Theater in Edo (Tokyo). Titled, 'Inazuma Byoshi' this play is the first kabuki play scripted from a novel. It was taken from a novel of the same name by the famous author, Santo Kyoden, written in 1806. The three kabuki actors are: Banto Shiuka, Ichikawa Danjuro, and Ichimura Hazaemon. Kunisada studied under Toyokuni and took the name Toyokuni III. Kunisada was born 1786 and died 1864. c.1848. This is a fantastic antique Japanese Edo Period c.1780 educational encyclopedia for women with explicit pictures and text detailing all the things an edo woman would need to know to be successful. Everything from the 'Hyakunin Isshu' or hundred poems that every well bred woman would be expected to know to sections on tea ceremony, the right incense, how to make kimonos, 'ohaguro' the art of blackening one's teeth and shaving eyebrows after marriage to lessons on high and low tides. Every page is calligraphy or pictures carved into woodblocks and then woodblock printed, a mind boggling venture. Someone carved every character and picture. c.1780. (10" x 7" ) (25cm x 18cm).
