Spectacular antique Japanese bronze flower vase made for the Shogun Tokugawa Iemochi in 1861 to be presented to one of his Lords on a visit outside the castle. This was a rare event as presents were usually presented to the Shogun. In its original box, 'tomobako' and written on the outside is: 'Sentoku Kame Moyo' meaning noble brown bronze turtle pattern. The vase itself has a carp swimming on one side in bold raised relief and a turle on the other. The handles are mushrooms. The brown was achieved by smoking the bronze with straw. Also written on the outside of the box lid is 'Hanaike' meaning flower vase. On the inside of the lid is written, 'Bunkyu Gannen' which is the date 1861. Also on the inside of the box lid is written, 'Onari no setsu hairyo' meaning the Shogun would present this vase to one of his daimyos (lords) on a visit outside the castle. It was deemed a great honor to be able to receive the Shogun so it is quite unusual that the Shogun would be presenting a gift to his lord. 1861. (11" x 5") (28cm x 18cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $105.

From Aomori in northern Japan, this fabulous antique Japanese lacquer craftsman's workbench was used to produce tsuguru lacquer-ware in the late 1800's. The craftsman would sit on the floor in front of this workbench where he applied layer after layer of lacquer on different lacquer pieces. The spills and drips over the years built up creating a lacquer piece in itself. A stunning testimonial to a lifetime of work. Very colorful and in great condition. The front legs have a small gap where they attach to the table. c.1890. (18" x 11" x 3") (46cm x 28cm x 8cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $70.
