On the outside is written "Nambu" which means this beautiful tea kettle comes from the Nambu Craftsman in Northern Japan. Famous for their tea ceremony utensils from Edo in the 18th and 19th centuries, the lineage of fine craftsman continued producing Japan's finest tea kettles into this century. c.1920. An early turn of the century (1920) double-sided ranma transom carving with delicate cherry blossoms set in a black lacquered frame. Ranmas are transom dividers hung above the fusama doors in tatami rooms. Substantial thick carving indicates its quality and upper class ownership. (6'1" x 18") (182cm x 45cm). Negoro is a special lacquering technique created by the monks at Negoro-ji temple in Wakayama Prefecture south of Kyoto. The undercoat of black is worn through the red lacquer overcoat through burnishing and polishing to create the signature negoro pattern. Slight nicks and worn spots but they add rather than detract from the mingei look. Taisho Period (1912-1926). (14" x 14" x 1½") (35cm x 35cm x 4cm).
