Almost identical to the basket on the cover of the Japanese flower basket bible, "Containing Beauty: Japanese Bamboo Flower Baskets" , this antique Japanese basket is a classic example of one of the the main insertion techniques employed in the Meiji Era (c.1867-1912). Called 'midare' in Japanese, the technique involves inserting wide strips diagonally into the body. The rim has been constructed using the 'tomobuchi technique' whereby the bamboo body strips are continued upward to form the rim. The handle is made from a root and lacquered. Made at the height of basket making in the Meiji Period. c.1890. (16½" x 10") (42cm x 25cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $65.

Beautiful white Hagi glaze vase signed and in the original box. Morinobu Kimura was born in 1932 in Kyoto City and was designated 'mukeibunkazai' or human cultural treasure. Famous for his natural grace in pottery and use of vegetable ash glazes. His works have been bought by the Kyoto National Museum. c.1970. (dia. 12" x 10") (dia. 30cm x 27cm). Antique Japanese tea jar used to store and transport tea leaves to the ancient capital of Kyoto. Most tea jars were made in Shigaraki, a kiln area outside of Kyoto. legant Japanese lacquered flower stand used for the tea ceremony. Layers of lacquered polychrome patterning most frequently used in the spotted 'karanuki' style. The lacquer is patted on with a spatula, creating different patterns and textures. The layers of lacquer are finally burnished down to produce the mottled art deco look. Great condition. c.1935.
