Fantastic antique Japanese bronze hibachi/flower vase. Would make a stunning center piece. Thick bronze with waves carved all the way around in magnificent detail. The bronze is 'akado' the highest quality found in Edo Japan. Inside on the bottom is carved the auspicious crane and mythical turtle floating around on clouds in bronze. An antique Japanese bronze Kyoto zen temple gong with red lacquered striker that is covered in goat skin. The red lacquer dates this antique set to be late Meiji Period. The cushion is a bit newer. Signed in flowing kanji 'Hashimoto Isuke' with the 'Marumatsu' or Round Pine brand on the bottles. In characters are also the sake batch edition numbers, 'No. middle 6 and middle 13'. c.1850. Similar to other museum quality pieces on display at the Yanagi Soetsu Exhibition at the Kyoto Museum on Sanjo Street in the center of Kyoto. This superb antique Japanese piece could easily have been on display in the museum as pure mingei folk art that Yanagi so prized. Spectacular ash fired glaze on this Iga yaki ceramic. Unbelievably great condition for this antique Japanese Edo Period c.1870 buddhist temple altar table. The lacquer has gofun underneath the red lacquer to protect against humidity; a practise that ended in the late 19th century. The metal is hand forged copper. The top of the table is wakasa-nuri a specialized lacquering technique where the lacquer is burnished then polished. c.1870. (11" x 7" x 5½") (28cm x 18cm x 14cm).
