Japanese antique Edo Period c.1860 noh mask `waka-onna` young woman. Very large, the kind used for noh mask carving shop signs. Japanese cypress (hinoki) wood and painted layers of white `gofun` crushed seashells and rice paste. Due to age, there are chips and crack lines in the gofun paint, but the mask itself is solid. Gorgeous bronze early Meiji Period c.1870 antique Japanese incense holder "koro". On one side is the head of a dragon floating amongst buddhist clouds in nirvana holding a 'hoju' or sacred gem. The dragon was a Japanese buddhist symbol of the virtue of vigilence and protector of the buddhist faith. The sacred gem or 'hoju' is viewed as a symbol of purity and the void. This wish - granting gem represents the promise of being released from all desire, the ultimate goal or wish of buddhist practice. The side handles are mythical creatures. Set of Three Japanese bingata kimono stencils from Okinawa. The Okinawa Islands
in the south of Japan were formally a kingdom known as the Ryukyu Kingdom
with their own distinct culture. The textiles display bold, vivacious
designs and bright colors. They were primarily for the royalty only, until
of late. The first of the set of three is of pine, flowers, grasses and streams. The
second features a gorgeous mix of plum blossoms and pines while the last
stencil has a flowing bouquet of maples, bamboo, chrysanthemum, grasses and

Magnificent antique Japanese iron 'tesubin' tea ceremony kettle with imperial dragon floating amongst the clouds representing Japan's most lofty virtues and character. By the late seventh century, dragons were popular as painted images in Buddhist temples indicating a stong connection with zen and the wisdom of enlightened self-discipline. In the tea ceremony it came to be associated with contemplation and conquering the self. This early Meiji tetsubin c.1879 has a dragon in very explicit detail with clouds in raised relief. the top is yutenki bronze with a silver tsumami. c.1879. One of the chief figures in the Noh Theatre pantheon, `Okina` is the main character in a Noh play performed as a ceremony every New Year`s Day in the morning on the noh stage at Kasuga Shrine in Tamba outside of Kyoto. This ceramic facsimile of the original wood carving is a souvenir from the early Showa Period 1926-1989. Wonderful antique Japanese collector's piece. c.1935.
