This 'sodedaru' sake container in cask form dates to the early 20th century, c.1910. Red lacquer trims the top, bottom, and side edges of the black lacquered container. The family crest of two fans enclosed in a circle is finished in gold lacquer. A pouring spout rises from the cask and the faceted red and black lacquer stopper is attached to the sodedaru with a metal chain. During a shinto style wedding, the family of the bride and groom would bring sake in a matched pair of large black lacquered casks like these for the ritual toast. This style of lacquered wooden sake container is called a sleeve cask because its shape is reminiscent of a kimono sleeve. Overall condition is excellent except for a few nicks on the top edge of the back. c.1910. (excluding storage box 16½" x 16½" x 5") (excluding storage box 42cm x 42cm x 13cm). Layers of lacquer that create polychrome patterns are the signature of lacquer from the Tsugaru District of Northern Japan. When it originated, Tsugaru-ware was confined to such luxury items as scabbards and gifts for the shogun. This bowl was used for over a 100 years to mix the different colored lacquers that make up tsugaru lacquer-ware. A thick build-up of lacquer overtime in the mixing has created a textured outside and a mottled finish inside. Definitely a museum piece. Just stunning. c.1870. (9" x 4½") (23cm x 12cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $55.
