Layers of lacquer on this antique Japanese flower stand create a polychrome pattern which was the signature of lacquer-ware from Wakasa. The style dates from the Edo period. Japanese craftsman patted the lacquer on with a spatula, thereby creating different patterns and textures. Little specks of inlay pearl add to the aesthetic. The layers of lacquer were then burnished down to produce the antique mottled patterning. c.1910. (20" x 12" x 3") (50cm x 30cm x 8cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $50.

Chikuseisai was one of the leading innovators of basket making in the late Meiji Period combining Chinese influences with a newly opened Japanese artistic sense to create a startling new wave of flower basket making. Active in the Osaka-Kyoto area, he was a bit eccentric but his art was second to none. This basket features his trademark weaves mixing warp and weft in three sections to create a three dimensional effect. The basket is hexogonal from top to bottom, starting at the base with a 'gozame-ami' mat plaiting with vertical inserts. Half-way up he continues the horizontal mat plaiting but starts a cascading diagonal weft pattern. At the top he creates a three dimensional rim with protruding mat plaiting. Sensational. c.1890. (17" x 10") (43cm x 25cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $50.
