With the famed `Goto` brand and mark on the botom, this vintage Japanese chrysanthemum porcelain flower vase is a pre-war antique piece c.1935. The chrysanthemum was a symbol traditionally of superior character, long life and virtue. A 16-petaled chrysanthemum forms the family crest of Japan`s Imperial household. Signed Kano Hokkyo Eiun, who died in Genroku 10 (1697). This is a brilliantly executed Kano antique Japanese scroll. Titled "Toryumon" The Dragon Ascends The Throne. Eiun was the chief painter for the Izumo-Han (province) daimyo, Lord Matsudaira. The waves and the way the waterfall falls with a slight rise and separate fall on the left are Kano school trademarks. In legend, it is said that when the carp goes over the top of the waterfall he/she becomes a dragon. The carp is a symbol of courage, perseverance and success. Painted on silk. The surrounding silk broccade is quite beautiful although not original. It has an `awase - bako` box which is old pauwlonia wood. Tiny stain at top left. c.1685. (66" x 18") (167cm x 45cm). Gorgeous solid bronze lost wax-cast antique Japanese tea ceremony `suiban` flower vessel. Signed on the underside "Dai Nihon Bunsei-nen" indicating a 19th century (1830) original. On one side is a cloud riding dragon in raised relief. The dragon was a symbol of heaven and supreme wisdom. As a motif, the dragon`s presence was considered protective and auspecious; an invitation to good fortune. On the other side, a phoenix (ho) representing peace, prosperity and enlightened rule, since it chooses to dwell only where these conditions prevail. Paired with a dragon, the phoenix stands for the empress and the dragon represents the emperor. c.1830. (16" x 9½" x 4½") (41cm x 24cm 12cm). Heavy item. C.1860 antique Japanese tetsubin tea ceremony kettle from the famed Ryubundo Iron Guild in Japan. The lid is bronze dipped in hot oil soon after firing to get the `yutenki` colored effect. The tsumami lid top is also bronze. The iron base features buddhist clouds and a dragon dancing among them in raised relief. The dragon or `ryu` dwells among the clouds symbolizing supreme wisdom and immortality. As a motif, the dragon`s presence on a household object was considered protection and auspicious, an invitation to good fortune. c.1860. (7" x 8", base to rim 5") (18cm x 20cm, base to rim 13cm). Reishi mushrooms are thought to be imbued with magical and spiritual healing powers and are treasured in Japan. On one side are a nobleman and two retainers crossing a bridge all in raised gold relief and on the other side pine (matsu) and bamboo (take) surrounding a village. During the late Edo and Meiji Periods (c.1800-1912) Shigaraki kilns produced a wide variety of wares for everyday use. The exterior of this antique Japanese planter is decorated in what Shigaraki potters call `hagi-nagashi`. Spectacularly carved vintage Japanese Ainu bear from Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan where the Ainu people, Japan's closest indigenous equivalent to the indians of the American northwest. The Ainu revered the salmon and the bear - salmon motif predominates in their art. This bear was carved out of a single block of Japanese elm and is signed. c,1950.
