And of course on the other side is the playful image of Daikoku, the god of wealth raking up gold coins. c.1875. (7" x 9", base to rim 5") (18cm x 23cm, base to rim 13cm). Signed with the famous Zohiko hanko from Kyoto, this brilliantly executed antique Kyoto lacquer-ware was created at the end of a golden era of maki-e craftsmanship in Meiji 1867-1912. Maki-e is a technique of sprinkling either gold or silver dust onto still wet lacquer to create a 3 dimensional picture on the surface or raised relief. The dust is applied to a ground made from many coats of lacquer which have been painstakingly applied, dried and polished over a period of many months. In this piece, a 'takamaki-e' (high makie) technique was employed. On the top, a carp in gold high relief is swimming. The carp's eye is made from abolone shell. Japanese adopted the Chinese legend that a 'koi' or carp that could manage to complete the long, arduous trip inland to the dragon gate instantly turn into dragons and ascend to the clouds. As motifs on household objects, carp were meant to inspire and magically instill courage and perserverance. On the front, gold maki-e waves and speckled gold dust in raised relief indicated the ascension to the dragon heaven. c.1910. (6½" x 4" x 2½") (17cm x 10cm x 6cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $40.
