Made for the head monk (roshi) at one of Kyoto`s Soto Sect zen temples, this antique Japanese roshi cushion was used for zen meditation. The 16 petal chrysanthemum motif was the crest of Japan`s imperial household. It is a symbol of superior character and virtue, values highly respected in Japan since ancient times. c.1960. Japanese character from a famous story of a Kyoto merchant's son, Fukusuke, who had an oversized head. The mechant's family treated him with much love and soon their business prospered. Other neighbors and merchants noticed and a custom grew where businesses put a likeness of Fukusuke in their establishments for prosperity. c.1930. (13½" x 13½" x 8½") (34cm x 34cm x 22cm). These Japanese boys dancing while holding a rope between them have been remounted on a stand covered with puppet theatre book paper (jorui). Their expressions and old cloth dates their age. Looks like the hands and feet have been touched up but detracts in no way from the attractiveness of the dolls. Would make a great addition to your antique collection. c.1880.
