From the famed Shigaraki Kilns north of Kyoto. Known for their clays, Shigaraki was made famous by Sen no Rikyu the originator of the Japanese tea ceremony. He chose Shigaraki ceramics as the choice of tea masters. This Soy Vase has the distinctive Shigaraki green stripes. The spout at the bottom can be used to route a chord and it would make a stunning lamp. Meiji Period 1870-80. (19½" x 12") (54cm x 30cm). Large, heavy item. This signed Tomiyama iron tetsubin was from an early 20th century master craftsman. Making these "arare" pointed iron tea pots highly sought after by the tea world entailed a high level of skill few ironsmiths possessed. On the outside is written "Nambu" which means this beautiful tea kettle comes from the Nambu Craftsman in Northern Japan. Famous for their tea ceremony utensils from Edo in the 18th and 19th centuries, the lineage of fine craftsman continued producing Japan's finest tea kettles into this century. c.1920.
