From Takayama in central Japan, it is home of a type of lacquer called 'shunkei'. This involves a lacquering technique in which wood is first lightly stained and then coated with a clear yellow lacquer to produce a resistant coating and draw out the grain of the wood. SOLD. Thank you!

This "tsugaru-nuri" lacquered flower stand is the signature of lacquer-ware from the Tsugaru district of Aomori Prefecture, in the northern part of the main island of Honshu in Japan. Layers of lacquer create a polychrome pattern, and is a style unique to this district that dates from the Edo Period. Rather than spreading the lacquer on as is the convention, Tsugaru craftsman pat the lacquer on with a spatula, thereby creating different patterns and textures. The layers of lacquer are then burnished down to produce the characteristic mottled patterning. c.1930. (19½" x 12") (49cm x 30cm)
