Born in 1948, Hideki Nishijima is one of Japan's foremost contemporary ceramic artists. He has won Japan's top ceramic prizes, including the Japan Crafts Prize and the Japanese Traditional Crafts Prize. This art deco vase with swirling lines is an examle of his superb artistry. Signed and in the original box, the characters read; HIDEKI, RYU MITSU willow kiln) TSUBO (vase) and KURO SAI SEN KOKU BUN (carved black colored lines). c.1988. A Banko ceramic vase fired at the famous Banko Kilns in central Japan in 1989 (it says 'Heisei Gan' on the bottom meaning 1989), recently known for museum quality art deco vases. The kilns had their start in the Edo Period (17th, 18th and 19th centuries). This sensational modernistic piece is signed by Hiroshi Shimizu and in its original box. Shimizu, born in 1944, is from a long line of legendary Banko artists. His father was declared a human cultural asset by the Government. Hiroshi himself has won a number of awards and prizes including the Minister's Prize at the Nitten National Art competition. Also he won the prestigious Chunichi National Pottery Prize. The characters on the box read: 'Banko Tobun Tsubo' (Banko Vase) and the characters for 'Hiroshi'. Perfect condition. 1989. (15" diameter x 14") (38cm diameter x 36cm).
