In the original signed box, this Chikubosai II bamboo flower basket is the ultimate wabisabi aesthetic both Chikubosai and his father and mentor Chikubosai I always strove for. Simple elegance at its best. Maeda Chikubosai II was born 1917 and died recently in 2003. He is featured in the book 'Bamboo Masterworks:Japanese Baskets from the Lloyd Cotsen Collection' p. 181. In 1995 he was named a Living National Treasure for the bamboo crafts. His baskets have a contemporary feel in the use of thin round bamboo stips to create geometrical designs. c.1960. Excellent Taisho Period c.1930 'wagumi' Japanese tea ceremony bamboo flower basket. The root handle contrasts superbly with the diagonal inserts and midare irregular plaiting. The bamboo is 'susdake' smoked bamboo taken form old thatch roofed farm house roofs colored by hearth fires, prized by bamboo makers at the turn of the century. c.1930. (19" x 10") (48cm x 26cm). This important signed Yoshida Eji flower vase in the signed original box is by one of Japan's famed and most revered bronze artists. He won the Oriental Art Exhibition Prize in 1932 and designed the gold medal for the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo. The characters on the box read: "Yoshida Eji Saku", (Made by Yoshida Eji) and "Chu Do Ka Bin" (Bronze Flower Vase). Perfect condition. c.1952. (diameter 7½" x 5½") (diameter 19cm x 14cm). Rich layers of tsugaru lacquer have been applied to this 'suzuri bako' letter box. The ink stone was kept inside and the 'fude' writing brushes. This style of suzuri bako is extremely rare. Most are black or gold lacquered. Tsugaru lacquers were applied with a spatula to create an art deco effect. The lid is ever so slightly warped and hardly noticable. c.1930.
