Very rare esoteric buddhist pilgrim's coat worn as the Shugendo practitioner walked on pilgrimage to the sacred temples and mountains to attain oneness. Shugendo is an esoteric Buddhist mystical-spiritual tradition centered on an aescetic mountain dwelling practice. Shugendo incorporated Shinto philosophies with Taoism and esoteric Buddhism. This Shugendo practitioner's coat has the seals and temple stamps of all the Esoteric Buddhist sacred temples of any importance. Temples from the sacred mountains of Ohmine, Koya, Heie-zan, Nara as well as the most famous Shingon temples. The back of the coat has images of fudo-myo , sanskrit, and the complete Heart Sutra. Exceptional buddhist bronze temple lantern that was used on the altar of Daiun Buddhist Temple. The Japanese characters around the base read: Showa 6 (1932), January. It was donated to the temple by the members whose names are on the base to celebrate their completion of a grueling winter 'shugyo' ascetic spiritual training period. The lantern has all the bells hanging and it is in excellent condition except for some holes in the paper that line the inside of the middle part. It has an electric bulb inside. Lovely lantern. Ask for shipping quote. H:about 108cm; W: about 42cm.

Exceptional zen buddhist temple altar lantern. The flaming jewel at the top has an unusual staff and ball at the top. The lantern dates from the Showa Period c.1950 and actually had the oil plates inside with wicks. They were very gritty so we removed them. The metal is a bronze alloy. The paper lining the inside is original and has some oil stains. We can repaper on request. The little bells hanging on the mythical elephants are missing. Otherwise very good condition. Ask for EMS shipping quote. H:90" x W:38"
