Brilliant folk art piece. A clay 'Fushimi Ningyo' sumo doll from the 1930s. Fushimi Ningyo dolls were sought after souvenirs by visitors to Kyoto. Fushimi Inari being one of the must see great shrines of southern Kyoto. The detail of the arms and fabulous facial expression make this a collector's piece. Compassionate, tranquil face expression holding the lotus blossom of peace in one hand and the Sacred Wishing Gem or 'hoju' in the other. Japanese characters inscripted on the right side. Wonderful Meiji Period C.1909 painting of a white egret standing on bamboo by the acclaimed master Hishida Shunso (1874-1911). One of Okakura Tenshin's puils, he played a major role in the Meiji era innovation of Nihonga. His real name was Hishida Miyoji and he was also know for his numerous paintings of cats. He was commissioned by the Tokyo National Museum and in 1898 he joined Okakura Tenshin in establishing the Nihon Bijutsuin. In 1903-1905 he traveled extensively overseas holding exhibitions in The United States and Europe. He was awarded the Order Of Culture. Excellent condition. Looks to have been remounted. Very rare and unusual Edo Period C.1960 fire brigade banner used to declare which fire brigade had rushed to the fire and heroically put it out first. Wonderful carving of 'Tenjin' the Shinto god of learning. In ancient times he was unjustly exiled and became a hero in Japanese folklore. Is revered as the god of learning and many Shinto shrines all over Japan are dedicated to him. This piece is from the Taisho Period c. 1915. Cedar wood, gofun crushed oyster shell paint and glass eyes. Very regal with normal age wear. H: about 10" W: about 12". Ask for shipping quote.
