Outstanding wood-fired ceramic earthenware tea ceremony misusashi from the famed kiln area of Shigaraki. Fired for three days in a climbing kiln, the natural glaze formations and organic colorings are simply a treasure. Textures and shape round out this piece to a masterpiece of ceramic art. C.1930. White 'choseki' long life stones which predominate in Shigaraki clays are in abundance in this piece. The bottom has firing scars but from the inside no cracks can be seen. When filled with water it did leak a bit. Ask for shipping quote. H: about: 10"; Diameter about 8".

Tranquil and protecting granite, hand - carved jizo of buddha sitting in prayer 'gassho' to protect all sentient beings. Sitting on a granite block with kanji characters inscripted on the front. The faze is serene and like al protective jizo guardian dieties, he does his job. H:about 48cm;W:about 26cm. Great condition of Buddha with a little blue paint speck on the back of the stone block stand (see pictures).

Very rare esoteric buddhist pilgrim's coat worn as the Shugendo practitioner walked on pilgrimage to the sacred temples and mountains to attain oneness. Shugendo is an esoteric Buddhist mystical-spiritual tradition centered on an aescetic mountain dwelling practice. Shugendo incorporated Shinto philosophies with Taoism and esoteric Buddhism. Shugendo literally means the way to spiritual power through discipline. This Shugendo practitioner's coat has the seals and temple stamps of all the Esoteric Buddhist sacred temples of any importance. Temples from the sacred mountains of Ohmine, Koya, Heie-zan, Nara as well as the most famous Shingon temples. The back of the coat has images of fudo-myo , sanskrit, and the complete Heart Sutra. There is an outer coat and hakama. Great condition. Made of 'asa' or linen. Ask for shipping quote.

Fantastic wood carving of Kukai or later known as Kobo Daishi, the buddhist monk who brought esoteric Shingon Buddhism back from China to Japan. He established the headquarters on the sacred mountain of Mt. Koya near Nara. Carved in the late EDO Period c. 1860's, the statue has 'gi yaman' or original glass eyes. Kobo Daishi sits in his regal monk posture holding a sutra scroll. His right hand once held glass prayer beads. He sits on a wood gold lacquered temple stand which is intricately ornate. The condition of Kobo Daishi is good with a bit of wear behind his head. See pictures. H:about 24cm; W: about 28cm. Ask for shipping quote.

Fascinating Taisho Period C.1920 tea ceremony bronze tripod incense censor. Almost art deco in design and feel. The Murashi-do bronze was dipped in hot oi at firing to create the mottled patinated colorings. The handles are elephant heads. The highlight of the piece is the very rare and exquisite square mouth and lid. The lid is adorned with a shishi lion which covers the hole the incense smoke wafts out of. Simply superb. Esoteric Dainichi Nyorai buddha that stands for Vairochana - whom represents the cosmic life that surrounds us like the air we breathe. The proper name is Mahavairochana. His elaborately arranged hair is surmounted by a crown, and he wears jeweled ornaments. The remnants of which we can see on this buddha. He holds the wisdom mudra with the five fingers of the right hand wrapped around the left index finger. The buddha is from the end of the Edo Period C. 1860. Exquisite sound. Deep and meditative. Wonderful Early Showa Period C.1940 zen buddhist temple bell used for sutra chanting. The bell is hand hammered bronze. Cushion is silk with cotton stuffing.
