Lovely antique gold gilt lacquer on Japanese cypress wood. These types of `Amida Nyorai` (Japanese) buddhas were commissioned by temple followers and donated to temples to earn merit or to pray for someones well being. This Amida Nyorai has a backgroung aureole halo arching forward over a standing buddha on a stand. Slight lacquer peeling on the base of the stand. The right hand is open in the Mudra of Fearlessness `semui-in` and the left is in the Gift-bestowing Mudra `yogan-in`. Age wear has brought out some of the undercoat of black lacquer. Very good condition. Back railings of the stand are off. c.1920. (16" x 6") (41cm x 15cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $50.

In the original signed box, this Chikubosai II bamboo flower basket is the ultimate wabisabi aesthetic both Chikubosai and his father and mentor Chikubosai I always strove for. Simple elegance at its best. Maeda Chikubosai II was born 1917 and died recently in 2003. He is featured in the book 'Bamboo Masterworks:Japanese Baskets from the Lloyd Cotsen Collection' p. 181. In 1995 he was named a Living National Treasure for the bamboo crafts. His baskets have a contemporary feel in the use of thin round bamboo stips to create geometrical designs. c.1960. (9" diameter x 7") (23cm diameter x 18cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $95.

From the late Edo c.1865 this is the best antique Japanese 'tsuno' face washing basin Kodo Arts has ever seen. Used in Kyoto by a Gion District geisha, the thickly black lacquered wood basin has maki-e gold swirling rivers and flowers on its banks throughout. The handles are exceptional, covered with floral copper fittings, the first of this kind Kodo Arts has ever come across. Usually they are just lacquered. Fabulous. c.1865. (13½" x 6½") (34cm x 17cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $70.

Written on the top are the Japanese characters `Tenshotennen` (Edo Period) and `Yojiro Saku` (made by Yojiro). This antique Japanese iron lantern has four parts; the base on tripod legs, the main cylindar body with squares motif (the latch is missing) the roof and the conical top. There is a small hole from age in the roof but this actually adds appeal. c.1860. (21" x 15") (53cm x 38cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $320.

Some of the best rattan wrappings, knots and stiches we have ever seen on an antique Japanese basket. The handle is held in place by buttresses made of bamboo wrapped with 'mushi-maki' knots and the seven 'cho-musubi' butterfly knots on the handle are exquisite. Verticle bamboo inserts on the body are elaborately decorated by 'insect stich knots (mushi-kagari). Handle is bamboo. Rim is a series of fine rattan knots. c.1900. (21" x 10") (54cm x 26cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $95.
