Sensational early Meiji Period bronze temple lantern, C.1875. Unbelievable fantastic condition with all the hanging bells in tact. The door pull is a bronze cicada, which we have never seen, and the crest in each panel is the holy hock leaf which is the family crest of the Tokugawa Shogun. The lattice work on each door is equally great and the four legs are rock solid. The paper lining the doors needs replacement and we can do it on request. H:70cm x W:50cm. Ask for shipping quote.

Very rare and unique Edo Period eyeglases made out of shell. The come in a dated paulownia box 'Keio 2 - c.1860' Also written on the top of the box is the name of the eyeglass store "Taniya" and the name of the owner is also written, "Shinanoya Youemon. Wonderfully weathered and wabi-sabi Late Meiji Period c.1910 bronze bell from a Shinto shrine. The bell usually hangs from the roof of the shrine entrance with a rope and you jiggle the bell to ring it and announce to the gods you have come to pray. Huge impact large bronze Taisho Period c.1920 lantern. Lovely vine lattice metalworkwork on the sides and 4 stout legs. Can either stand alone or be hung. There is a hole for an electric chord on the top and the original paper on the inside is off. (we can repaper on request). Top has slight bend (as you can see in the pictures) but otherwise in great condition. H:37cm x W:29cm

Wonderful Japanese 'Zushi" zen buddhist travelling altar in black lacquered wood case with gold gilt lacquered inside. Jizo Bosatsu diety inside with halo adorned with three flaming jewels. The jizo also holds the sacred wishing gem and seems like there was a staff in his right hand. Very nice carving out of japanese cypress with serene, enlightened facial expression. The case has opening doors and hinges and latch on front are made of copper/bronze alloy. Slight lacquer wear on the back. Ask for shipping quote. H:20cm x W:11cm

Stunning set of gold gilt lacquered wood altar flowers from a zen buddhist temple, late Taisho Period, C.1920. 12 pieces in all of lotus leaves and pods. One pod is missing the surrounding leaves but otherwise all there. Expertly carved and thick gold gilt lacquer. Some of the stems have lacquer wear but very stout and glowing. Ask for shipping quote. Exceptional Taisho Period c. 1910 'suzuri bako' maki-e lacquered caligraphy writing box. Sensational gold maki-e chrysanthemums some with silver leaf petals and some with raised maki-e or mother of pearl inlay. Chrysanthemum petals and leaves with gold maki-e and mother of pearl make up this elegant, rich mosiac. On the inside of the top are 3 gorgeous butterflies also in raised gold maki-e. The bottom inside has a silver ink pourer with a pine motif and a black nachi ink stone. The bottom of the bottom box has some worn away lacquer on the corners and on the top, one of the mother of pearl chrysanthemums has a crack. Otherwise in fabulous condition. Ask for shipping quote. Exceptional zen buddhist temple altar lantern. The flaming jewel at the top has an unusual staff and ball at the top. The lantern dates from the Showa Period c.1950 and actually had the oil plates inside with wicks. They were very gritty so we removed them. The metal is a bronze alloy. The paper lining the inside is original and has some oil stains. We can repaper on request. The little bells hanging on the mythical elephants are missing. Otherwise very good condition.
