Some of the best rattan wrappings, knots and stiches we have ever seen on an antique Japanese basket. Stunning richly patinaed antique Japanese bamboo flower basket from the turn of the century c.1900. This 'wagumi' Japanese style basketry is the epitome of the new free wheeling style that emerged at the end of the Meiji Period c.1868-1912. Using aged susdake bamboo taken from old farmhouse ceilings, this unsigned basket maker has created a texured weave with a beautiful aesthetic sense. A magnificent piece. One tiny crack in a strand near the rim but not a break. c.1900. (18" x 10& ...click for details

This exceptionally tall, turn of the century c.1900 antique Japanese flower basket was made for the Japanese tea ceremony alcove (tokonoma). Usually a basket and scroll were placed together to create the refined ambience required for the tea ceremony. The body of this basket is entirely twill plaited (ajiro-ami). The rim demonstrates 'ate-buchi' wrapping. Just a bit of wear loss on the under bottom but is very imperceptable. Impact piece. c.1900. (20" x 7") (51cm x 18cm). EMS S ...click for details

One of the few antique Japanese baskets Kodo Arts has seen with this rare double wall construction. This basket shows various insertion techniques; the plain twill plaiting of the inner wall supports the outer one. This antique technique was used so that the viewer can see both the interior and exterior of the basket. The flat projecting rim and wave patterns on the body are extremely difficult techniques to execute. Inside is bamboo vase to hold flowers. c.1910. (13" x 9") (33cm x 23cm ...click for details

Almost identical to the basket on the cover of the Japanese flower basket bible, "Containing Beauty: Japanese Bamboo Flower Baskets" , this antique Japanese basket is a classic example of one of the the main insertion techniques employed in the Meiji Era (c.1867-1912). Called 'midare' in Japanese, the technique involves inserting wide strips diagonally into the body. The rim has been constructed using the 'tomobuchi technique' whereby the bamboo body strips are continue ...click for details
