Breathtaking antique Japanese cloissone vase from the Ando Factory. In the original signed box, the characters read 'shigyokuju yoran kabin' meaning purple jewel glaze orchid flower vase, and 'Ando ShippoTen Tsukuri' made by the Ando Cloissone Company. Reflecting the deep respect for the culture of the tea ceremony, this Edo Period antique Japanese bronze 'suiban' flower vase was used for an ikebana arrangement for a tea house. The bronze dish on tripod legs is decorated with a wonderful dragon seemingly sipping from the void. The bronze dragon is masterfully sculpted with an almost playful expression. Used as a decorative talisman on top of the roof gables of a Buddhist temple to ward off evil and protect the wooden temple from fires. This antique Japanese onigawara roof tile has a playful expression and there is licken growing on the right wing. From the south of Kyoto in an area known as Fushimi, there is a huge shrine called, 'Inari Shrine'. In Edo (1614-1867) and Meiji (1867-1912) the area around the shrine specialized in making clay dolls fired in Kyoto kilns as souviners for the visitors to Kyoto. They served as protective talismans and household deities. Three piece antique Japanese early Meiji Period c.1885 bronze flower vase used for the tea ceremony and ikebana flower arrangements. The bottom stand is on three gourd legs with raised swirling waves. The body has raised geese flying amongst pines. Geese with pines connotates 'kanraigetsu' the eigth lunar month in the old calendar - the month of the geese's return. Folk beliefs associate geese with wedded bliss. Written on the top are the Japanese characters `Tenshotennen` (Edo Period) and `Yojiro Saku` (made by Yojiro). This antique Japanese iron lantern has four parts; the base on tripod legs, the main cylindar body with squares motif (the latch is missing) the roof and the conical top. Wonderful antique Japanese tea ceremony tray to serve sweets. Meiji Period c.1890 made of persimmons wood with rich patina and undulating edges. Inscripted on the tray in flowing japanese characters are the kanji reading 'sei ogi-zo' meaning realized sage and the maker's signature which we can't read. Excellent condition. c.1890. This wonderful Taisho Period c.1920 antique Japanese ceramic Daruma figurine is from the Bizen kilns, one of Japan's seven most famous ceramic kiln areas. The wood fired ash glaze is superb on this piece as is his playful expression, especially the eyes. Daruma brought zen to Japan and is revered for his determination towards enlightenment.
