This antique Japanese tea ceremony iron tetsubin has a poem in raised relief on one side and a 'hechima' gourd plant on the other. The Kanji characters are a zen poem contrasting the summer gourd and the whirling heart. The gourd symbolizes the down-to-earth feeling of grounded wholeness. There is a patch in the middle of the bottom where it was fixed a hundred years ago. An excellent glimpse into tesubin repair in the Meiji Period. It adds to the overall allure of the piece. c.1890.
