Simply stunning antique Japanese Edo Period c.1850 tea ceremony iron 'chagama' brazier for boiling the water for the tea cermony. Tripod legs support the base. Raised leaf patterns encircle the body while the iron rings are split, dating the piece to late Edo when this was the style. A rather large antique Japanese tetsubin from Taisho(1912-1926), the handle is very unusual with a winding twisted design near the base of both handle stems. One of the four great tetsubin guilds in Kobe, this antique Japanese iron teapot was dedicated by the maker to a Mr. Kato with an inscription on the inside lid. Exceptional antique Japanese 'arare' tea ceremony tetsubin with pure silver lid pull on a bronze lid. In a signed original box signed Nishi Kudo. Japanese characters on the box read: arare moyo' meaning dotted pattern; 'dai tetsubin' grand tea kettle; and 'iko iri' one in the original box. This Nambu c.1900 tetsubin displays the highest level of craftsmanship. Solid and heavy c.1910 antique Japanese tea ceremony tetsubin from the Ryubundo Ironworks Guild. Most tea ceremony utensils were made by two top end major ironwork guilds - Ryubundo being one of them. This gorgeous kettle features eight panels - four filled with hexagon shapes repesenting mythical turtles, symbols of longevity. This antique Japanese tea ceremony iron tetsubin has a poem in raised relief on one side and a 'hechima' gourd plant on the other. The Kanji characters are a zen poem contrasting the summer gourd and the whirling heart. The gourd symbolizes the down-to-earth feeling of grounded wholeness.
