| On curling black lacquered wood stand with gold vine design on the legs, this antique Japanese brass noh figure is a character from the Japanese world of Noh. With a candle flame placed in front, the shadows will dance. The costume has many stylized hexigonal tortoise shell patterns, a popular design in Japanese art. Cranes are also in raised relief. Both are often teamed together to symbolize longevity and wisdom, and linked to Mt. Horai, the Taoist paradise in the Eastern Sea. c.1930.
