| Kodo Arts luckily acquired this Shaka Nyorai Buddha in a lot taken out of a temple from Okayama Prefecture, south of Kyoto. The 'nengo' or dates written on the bottom of many of the pieces was 'Ansei 5' c.1852. This buddha has no date but, considering the extraordinariy similarity to the other pieces, it is by the same craftsman or craftsmen. The condition is immaculate: the hands especially are original and haven't been broken and repaired at all. The face and and body have a very contemplative expression and the stand is made of thick gold lacquer on Japanese cypress wood. The sheath or halo in the background is swirling buddhist clouds; the buddha sits on a lotus petal stand and the base is waves and clouds. It is of museum quality. c.1852.
