Antique Japanese Hanakago Flower Basket c.1900

This exceptionally tall, turn of the century c.1900 antique Japanese flower basket was made for the Japanese tea ceremony alcove (tokonoma). Usually a basket and scroll were placed together to create the refined ambience required for the tea ceremony. The body of this basket is entirely twill plaited (ajiro-ami). The rim demonstrates 'ate-buchi' wrapping. Just a bit of wear loss on the under bottom but is very imperceptable. Impact piece. c.1900. (20" x 7") (51cm x 18cm).
