Japanese Antique Edo Period Zen Buddhist Candlestands
A pair of dark green lacquered wood antique Japanese candlestands on a lotus base with gold gilt lotus flower candle holders. Lotus is the sacred zen Buddhist symbol of purity. The stands sit on signed red lacquered bases. On the stems in carved relief are red lacquered flower decorations. Each stem has written on it the name of the donor of these candlestands - Seishu (donor) Murakami Myoko. On the bottom of the bases is the name of the craftsman, Honda Kenko Dai (maker). The insets of the gold lacquered lotus tops have copper liners which are loose and prong. Very unusual. The bottom of the base has some lacquer wear but the visible candlestands are in excellent condition. c.1880. (21" x 8") (53cm x 20cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $130.
