This exceptionally elegant antique Japanese 'rankauhari' white lacquered vanity box employs a rare white lacquer made form crushed quaill egg shells. Copies of this lacquering technique not using crushed egg shells will fade over time. This piece made in early Meiji Period c.1885 as a geisha's vanity box, still has the lovely original color and 'kagamakie' a sought after makie technique of raised gold pictures encased in fans and and circles on all sides in black and gold. All the auspicious symbols for good fortune and longevity: swallows and plum, cranes and pines, butterflies and rivers, peonies in raised gold. Some peeling and wear but for its age in very good condition. c.1885. (9" x 9" x 7½") (23cm x 23cm x 19cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $75.
