$10,000

A very rare bandaji (front opening chest) from Jin-Ju in the Kyongsang Province. Jin-Ju Bandaji are among the most desirable items for Korean Antique collectors, for the quality of the workmanship and the artistry of the design. It is unlikely that you will see another offered for sale. This one was purchased from Christie's at their November 25, 1997 sale of Korean Art. The description from the Christie's catalog may be seen in the second photo here. This magnificent and very rare chest is in the same good condition that it was in when it was purchased from Christie's. The iron bosses are inlaid in silver with stylized insects. 39.5w x 29.5h x 19.75d inches, 100 x 75 x 50 cm.

$7000

Early 20th Century Grand and Rare Museum Quality Large Painting of Sanshin, the Ancient Korean Mountain God. An important, one-of-a-kind painting from an important collection. An unusual, strongly Buddhist rendition of Sanshin holding a Buddhist rosary (yomju), with a magnificent Taoist landscape filled with beautiful symbols of longevity: deer, pine tree, waterfall, mountains, and pullocho, the mythical longevity plant. David Mason, author of Spirit of the Mountains (highly recommended reading) has seen thousands of Sanshin over many years of living in Korea, but states in his book that he has seen only three in his life with a Buddhist rosary. This painting goes even further and has an exquisite Kwanum, the Buddhist deity of Mercy and Compassion, descending on swirling clouds. The angelic attendants serve ginseng root, a symbol of a long and healthy life, to Sanshin. His feather fan is used to summon spirits and the wind. This Sanshin's Shinsondae (place of meditation in the mountains) is breathtaking. The use of gold leaf in a Sanshin painting is exceedingly scarce. An altogether sublime masterpiece. Ink and colors and embossed gold leaf on silk mounted on paper. 60.5 x 48 inches, 154 x 122 cm (plus margins).

$6000

Black Lacquered Box with Dragon of Tortoise Shell and Mother-of-Pearl Inlay and brass hardware and brass wire with a silk-lined interior. This dragon that winds its way all around the box is exquisitely rendered and captures the loose and innocent quality of Korean dragons that art lovers adore in Korean paintings and ceramics, but does so in a medium that does not easily lend itself to such qualities, so this is really a finely accomplished work of art and a rare, museum quality piece. 12 x 12 x 7.5 inches, 30 x 30 x 19 cm.

$5000

Six-Panel Chaekkori Screen. Old Chaekkori (Korean Scholar's Items Screen) like this are rare. This is the oldest Chaekkori that we have ever offered for sale. Chaekkori, screens depicting books and scholar's items, are abundant with symbols of diligence, motivation, good fortune and virtue. Chaekkori Screens are uniquely Korean, despite the fact that many of the items depicted in a Chaekkori are Chinese. The Choson Dynasty Korean scholar had much respect for Chinese art and learning, but expressed that admiration in a uniquely Korean manner through Chaekkori. We see items here that indicate refined comfort, but more important than the sense of gentility that is conveyed, is the ideal of self-improvement to which everyone could aspire: rich or poor, young or old. Though the items depicted were not readily available to the poor, the Chaekkori could inspire them nonetheless. Adults enjoyed them, but they would also be placed in children's rooms to teach them the value and beauty of culture and learning. French artists as early as the 1880's saw ideas in this genre that they imported into their own art. 106 x 73 inches, 269 x 185.5 cm.

$5000

18th Century Korean Furniture is so rare that we have only had one other example for sale. This 18th Century Bandaji from Taegu is truly a museum piece, as the few extant 18th Century pieces of Korean furniture are almost all in museums or private collections, and more specifically, we know of only one other 18th Century Taegu Bandaji that exists anywhere (The Weisman Art Museum's Edward R. Wright Collection; the late Edward R. Wright was the co-author, along with my old friend Pai Man Sill, of the book considered to be the bible on Korean antique furniture, Traditional Korean Furniture). This bandaji is an important piece of history and a fine example of the early and simple style. With its understated ironwork and slender door, the proportions are rare and elegant. Truly a once-in-a-lifetime offer. 36.75w x 20.75h x 15.75d inches, 93.5w x 53h x 40d cm.

$4400

A wonderful and unique example of Cheonghwa Baekja, Korean Blue and White Porcelain bottle with a lovely design and form. The sensitive and skilled painter of this fine bottle began with a light blue ring around the neck and two darker rings at the foot under the Youi scroll design that encircles the bottom of the body. The Youi is a mushroom-shaped scepter or talisman. Having defined his canvas, he composed a most idyllic microcosm of butterflies, a Korean symbol of happiness, fluttering past peonies that spray in every direction, contrasting with the very small and quietly perched bird. The peony is a symbol of love and prosperity. The form itself is graceful and subtle and begins with a gently flared mouth atop a narrow neck that subtly and almost imperceptibly flares out to an elongated round body with a low hip that gently curves downward to the foot with a recessed base. The stone-like heft of the bottle and color of the pure white clay, along with the skilled painting make it almost certain that this fine blue and white porcelain bottle was made at the royal Kumsari kiln. Height: 10 inches, 25.5 cm; Circumference: 18.5 inches, 47 cm.
