This is an unusual and fascinating combination sake and hot water pot crafted so that it could be brought to the table on a cold winter night. It has its own hibachi which allowed for boiling water for tea and/or warming sake. An elegant and classic tetsubin (iron teapot for the tea ceremony).The iron body imparts a wonderful wabi feel with its rustic quality. The lid is bronze (the traditional material for tetsubin lids), with an elaborate engraved signature on the inside, and topped with a stylized plum blossom-form knop. This plum theme is beautifully continued on the handle, with silver inlay forming stylized scattered plum blossoms. Edo era, Mid-19th century. Height w/ handle 8.3”, width 7.7”.

The vessel incorporates elements of classic bronze design, such as the dragon-head handles, the shield panels with a stylized butterfly design, and the turbulent wave patterns on the lower body and lid. The pierced knob on the lid adds to a wonderful silhouette for the mizusashi. Excellent condition. Meiji period. Height 10.3”, width 10.6”.

This unique and heavy Iron Tetsubin depicts a Japanese folktale called “The Quarrel of Tee Monkey and the Crab”. The story is of a Monkey, in his greed and covetousness, kills his friend the Crab over the fruit of a Persimmon tree. The son of the dead Crab conspires with others in the forest to extract his revenge. In the end the Monkey loses his head and the Crab’s family has its honor restored.
