A wonderfully stylized Japanese Deco bronze vase, featuring a pair of herons back-to-back. The silhouette takes on the shape of a classical Chinese garlic-vase, with the bulbous neck and wide body. The casting has cleverly been done to incorporate not just the facial features, but also indentations that imply the feathering of the bodies of the cranes. This exceptional sterling silver and glass decanter stands 9 inches tall and measures 5 inches at the widest point. The silver work is very nicely detailed and consists of interwoven Bamboo leaves, Plum blossoms, Chrysanthemum blossoms and Orchids. A motif showing these plants together in Japanese culture is known as “The Four Gentleman” (Shikunshi) and also as “The Four Princes”.
