Lg. 4 Sided Signed Japanese Cloisonne Basse-Taille Vase
This large, 12.0 in. by 6.0 in. wide, Japanese cloisonne vase is done in the Basse-Taille fashion in red akasuke enamel. The distinctive quality about this piece is the heavy embossed design of songbirds and bamboo leaves. On many of the basse-taille pieces the design on the body is not as sharp and one needs to catch the light at an angle to fully appreciate the design. This piece shows the design extremely well at longer distances in regular room lighting. The mouth and base are done in translucent red enamel with the makers mark under the enamel. Both the top and bottom rims are silver with the Japanese characters Jun-gin (pure silver) stamped on the bottom piece. The condition is near perfect with only one scratch approximately 5/8” long (see picture). There is one area on the shoulder that shows lines beneath the enamel that cannot be felt so most likely are original to the early stages of firing. Even when you know they are there, they are hard to locate in normal lighting (last picture). The ivory/wooden lid is not original to the piece. No Restoration. C. 1890’s
