Japanese Gin-Bari Vase Dragon
This striking Japanese vase was done in the Gin-Bari fashion where numerous strips of paper thin silver foil are embossed with a design then overlaid with translucent enamels. The motif consists of a powerful dragon soaring above a turbulent sea. Dragons were used as a symbol of royal power in the Japanese culture. There is a wonderful blending of background colors from a light blue fading into a dark purple above the sea. While unsigned the artists skill is apparent when examining the remarkable details in the dragon. The throat, top and bottom mounts are done in brass. The vase stands 6.0 in. tall. For the Gin-Bari style this piece is in good condition with a couple dings and stress lines (see last two pictures). Unsigned. Later Meiji.
