Japanese Cloisonne Vase with Kirin
A wonderful Japanese cloisonne vase of ovoid form with a short collared neck. The motif consist of two flying kirin, the fabulous mythical creature with the head of a dragon and the hooves of a deer, flying amongst blue stylized clouds over a stormy sea. The white background of the piece adds a nice contrast to the dark colors of the motif. Around the base and top of the piece there is very nice scroll work. This fine piece is in good condition with a couple small dings to the mount, a few stress lines, and some pitting which is common for its age. The piece stands 5 in. tall and has copper mounts. Unsigned C. 1885-1890.
