Beautiful Old Japanese Satsuma, Large Pair of Vases
Beautiful early Satsuma vases from the late Edo to early Meiji. Both of the vases have the design of a pair of cranes under pine trees on both sides. There are young pairs with their little birds on their side in between. Then, there is a panoramic view of small cranes flying over the trees decending toward the pair in the center which covers the entire vase. The scene is peaceful and happy. Pine trees and cranes symbolize longevity and the everlasting devotion of a couple. When pine needles fall to the ground, each falls as a pair.

Each birds were executed beautifully by the artist. The artist, obviously, spent a long time to complete his work. The peaceful but powerful scene of the prosperity over the happy, peaceful, united family is drawn. Each vase is signed but we could not make out of the second character (old character) of the signature. The glaze on the vase is thin and glassy with the finest crackles, adding a soft look to its body. One vase is larger and much heavier than the other. The larger one measures 16 1/4 inches tall, 9 1/2 inches wide without the rings and weighs over 10 pounds. The daintier one measures a half-inch less in height, same width and weighs almost 9 pounds. The condition is almost mint; no chips, cracks, repairs or any signs of restoration. The dark area inside (by the opening) is where the glaze was thin or missing. There are some gilt and color fading on one collar band and rim (smaller vase) for some reason and it is the only area that shows any kind of wear. There are some firing flaws on the rings and on their flower bases where the rings sit on. Museum quality.
