Japanese Tsuge Boxwood Comb Set
A set of Japanese tsuge(boxwood)combs with delicate cuts, ca 1950, never been used. In the old days, women used to have long hair and used oil to style their hair. The combs made out of tsuge wood have been known for their gentleness. They were treasured by the women and men for many centuries. For up-keeping of comb, camellia (tsubaki) oil has been used. The color of combs deepens as they were used from the camellia oil and natural oil from our hair. There are still enough people today who look only for tsuge combs. When we purchased this set in Kyoto, we were told that they were made in 1950.

The dimensions of the combs and pin from left to right (on photo #1) are 3 7/8”L x 1 5/8”W, 5 5/8”L, 4 1/2”L, 5 3/4”L, 5”L.
