ITO JAKUCHU Taku-Hanga Woodblock Print Book
The woodblock print book JAKUCHU GACHO ( Jakuchu's Album )was first published by Unsodo around Meiji 42( 1909 ). It was based on Jakuchu's original Taku-hanga( rubbing or intaglio woodblock print ) books, GENPO YOKA and SOKEN JO. Though our book which does not have its colophon is one of the volumes JAKUCHU GACHO, it is not the same as Unsodo's version. The following is the data for each version------( 1 ) original GENPO YOKA ( Exquisite Flowers from Mysterious Garden ) 1768 : album of 48 prints, 28.2cm x 17.8cm, with prose, poetry, and epilogue ( 2 ) original SOKEN JO ( Album of Elegant Designs on a Plain Ground ) 1768 : album of 36 prints, 28.7cm x 17.5cm, with prose, poetry, and epilogue ( 3 ) JAKUCHU GACHO ( Jakuchu's Album )by Unsodo, around Meiji 42 ( 1909 ) : 2 volumes, album of 82 prints, without prose, poetry, or epilogue, book ( 31.5cm x 21cm ), each print ( 26.5cm x 17.5cm )*Every print was pasted on the blank book. ( 4 ) Our JAKUCHU GACHO, one of the 2 volumes : album of 42 prints, without prose, poetry, or epilogue, accordion book with hard-covers, book = print : 26.5cm x 17.5cm ------With the help of Unsodo Publishing Co. ( since 1891 ), we have come to the conclusion. Our book, which was definitely printed from the same woodblocks as Unsodo's, was published by the previous owner of the woodblocks during the early - mid Meiji period ( 1870-90 ) when the washi paper of our book was possibly made. Thus this is the only copy published by the previous owner of the woodblocks around 1880s so far. condition : The last page has a small hole ( see the last closeup photo ). Note : Original GENPO YOKA & SOKEN JO are called " illusive ", since it is rare to find any copies. There are not many Unsodo version neither. It needs a lot of work for Taku-hanga printing.
