Incredible, completely handmade 'passementerie' necklace by California artists Alex & Lee, circa 1980s. In blue, green, silver, purple and gold cord holding a large piece of gold iron pyrite. The necklace is in very good, gently used condition, with appropriate age related dirt and very minor signs of wear, but no damage. Every Alex & Lee works of art are one-of-a-kind and unique. Their pieces have been featured in major magazines and runway shows. Their new pieces are sold in a handful of galleries, and the necklaces begin at $2,000. "Each piece is entirely handmade by Lee and Greg in their studio and home in Oakland, California. The unmistakable trademark of Alex & Lee is cord knotting in the tradition of passementerie (French or Italian for ‘passing of the cord’). Stone and mineral unbound by metal suggests entirely organic and natural origins. Utilizing the play of color, texture, and luster, the marriage of fiber, mineral, and objet’ trouve’, a dialogue of contrast and harmony is created that intrigues the eye and imagination."
