Spectacular sterling silver set by Taxco silversmith Los Castillo, circa 1940s. The large fur clip, which can be worn as a brooch or pin, and screw-back earrings are masterfully crafted in a classically organic design. The large showpiece with extraordinary repousse work depicting a stylized pre-Columbian water bird, possibly a heron, with a fish in its mouth. The recesses are oxidized which highlights the exquisite silverwork beautifully.
There are two long pins hinged to the back of the pin which fold into a clip. It is marked "Sterling, LOS CASTILLO, TAXCO, 220 (design number), MADE IN MEXICO". The brooch measures over 3.25" long and weighs 20.2 grams. The earrings each measure 1 3/8" and weigh 4.1 grams. Everything is in excellent vintage condition. This hallmark is shown on pages 99-105 of Bille Hougart's highly respected book, "The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks" (2006 edition). Mr. Hougart indicates that Los Castillo used this linear mark from 1940-1945 so this is a very early piece. |
