Chinese carved Mother of Pearl Shell Plaque
Chinese Mother of Pearl Shell carved Plaque, late 18th to early part of 19th Century, 8" high, 8 1/4" wide, 1" high when plaque is flat on the table, with flaming double Dragons in the cloud supporting the Chinese Character in the center. The carving is very fine and detailed three(3) dimensional and lots of open area through out the entire shell plague, the carving was done as thin as 1/32" thick in upper part and gradually getting thicker towards to the bottom section. To carve three(3) dimensional and leave a large open area between the design is lot harder than other kind of flat carving, there are more danger to brake the shell while carving with such a fine design and thin stripes of the detailed carving on the thin piece of shell. There are at least four(4) different heights and depth of detailed carving was used to carve the Dragon's face alone, the detail of the carving is extremely well done and very detailed. The color of backside is partially dark purple more like pale Eggplant color in upper area and some rough spots which is natural grain of shell on the thicker area, all natural colors and no damages or restoration.
