Rare sewing item is the Avery case named Temple Bar.
The Temple Bar Avery needle case is a rare and delightful brass miniature. The design was registered by W. Avery March 21, 1878(see VICTORIAN BRASS NEEDLECASES by Estelle Horowitz and Ruth Mann). This is the rarer version that comes with the legend"Erected 1670" on one side and "Removed 1878" on the other. The dates refer to the actual Temple Bar designed by Sir Christopher Wren to act as a gateway to The City, the legal and financial section of London. It was erected at the junction of Strand and Fleet Streets in 1670 and removed when Fleet Street was widened in 1878. The dimensions are 7x3.8x6.1 and the condition is excellent.
